Along the former inner-German border, remnants of the border fortifications can still be found, some of them overgrown by nature. These relics have an eerie and alien feel to them and continue to shape the landscape and its atmosphere even after nearly four decades.
The series features butterflies and moths painted on canvas and appliquéd onto brightly colored faux fur, which have found a refuge in the former border zone, which is now a nature reserve. The vivid colors serve as a reminder of the danger they face, as they are all endangered or threatened with extinction.
"transit" is an ongoing series that I have been working on since the scholarship from the Cultural Foundation of the Free State of Thuringia in 2018 and in which I am dealing with the changed perception of being on the move at high speed. Photos taken from the train, bus or car window serve as a starting point for the oil paintings.
Natural disasters are existential events that humans have little to counter and that remind us of our own fragile existence. In certain regions, people live permanently with the knowledge that a tremor can occur at any time. The series wave (oil on canvas with sewn structure) shows landscapes that have been affected by seismic activity, as well as sometimes accompanied by a volcanic eruption. The sewn structure is based on seismographic records of earthquakes that have occurred in the same region as the depicted landscape.
